Sony Ericsson announced at the MWC 2011 in Barcelona the game changing Xperia Play, the latest mobile phone in its Xperia line-up of Android Smartphones. The new Sony-Ericsson Play runs on Gingerbread (version 2.3), the latest version of Google's Android OS platform. The Sony-Ericsson Play will also be the first PlayStation Certified mobile device. This means it will have access to Sony PlayStation game content provided through the PlayStation Suite initiative, currently under development by Sony Computer Entertainment and due to launch later this year.

Sony-Ericsson has partnered with key publishers in the gaming industry to deliver rich multimedia content at the launch of the Sony-Ericsson Play with many leading new titles available via the Android Marketplace. Leading franchises coming to the Sony-Ericsson Xperia Play Smartphone includes EA's The Sims 3 and FIFA 10 for mobile. GLU Mobile / Activision will be bringing Guitar Hero while Gameloft's titles include Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell. Sony Ericsson mobile is also partnering with Unity Technologies, using its award-winning development platform, to ensure a continuous flow of high quality 3D game titles.

A pre-loaded software application will enable users to easily discover and download titles that have been optimised for mobile game play on the Sony Ericsson Play Smartphone, access recently played games and see information about the games they have downloaded. The new Sony Ericsson Play will be available globally in selected markets from March 2011.
